Sant Pau Hospital reopens now as a modernist jewel

SANT PAU HOSPITAL REOPENSAfter three years of building works, Barcelona’s Sant Pau Hospital it’s now renewed and reopened, brighter than ever.
Even though you might think that visiting a hospital is not one of your main thoughts when you visit Barcelona, visiting Sant Pau’s Hospital is different. It is unique in its kind, designed by the famous and well-known architect Lluís Domènech I Montaner, who has also designed buildings known all around the world including Casa Tomas, Casa Fuster and Palau de la música catalana.

Sant Pau’s Hospital as we know it nowadays dates back to 1902, when Domènech I Montaner was asked to design a new and modern project for the Hospital, first built in 1401 by the old City Council of Barcelona. Since it meant a lot of hard work, the hospital was finished nearly 30 years later (in fact, the one who was in the front line of the project by then was Domènech I Montaner’s son Pere, after his father died).
By the end of 19th Century, the hospital became too small to take care of all patients because of the quick growth of Barcelona’s population.
Nowadays, only a part of the Hospital is used to treat its patients and  the Hospital has become the place of many international organizations, such as the Global University Network for Innovation, the European Forest Institute, and many other environmentally friendly organizations directly connected with UNESCO, since the building was declared world heritage by the same organization in 1997.
