The creative heritage of Antoni Gaudi became the hallmark of Barcelona a long time ago. Sagrada Familia, Palau Guell, Casa Milà and other constructions are very well-known around the world. Starting from 16th of November, Barcelona citizens and visitors have one more point in their list of things to see: Gaudi´s first project as an architect, Casa Vicens.
This is one of the most important new attractions in Barcelona of last years. Open to the public the first Gaudi’s work is an important event. The building has been built more than 130 years ago, but until now it has remained in a private property. The house has been constructed as the summer residence for family of Manuel Vicens during the period from 1883 to 1885 when Gracia was an independent village in the north of Barcelona. Owners of the house had their own factory of brick and a ceramic tiles production and that also inspired Casa Vicens style.
For many years the house served as the residence for three families who lived there till 1920. After that the building has been redeemed by one owner. In 2014 the private Andorran bank Mora Banc has redeemed the house, constructed by Antoni Gaudi and has carried out necessary restoration works that have taken two years, and now the building built in the 19th century is being opened for visits.
This house became the first work for the talented architect. At that time, Gaudi has been very much interested in architecture eastern style (Arabian and Asian) and clearly inspired Casa Vicens’ project. Eastern ornaments, fountains and also imitation of wildlife are distinctive features of the bright and unusual house of Casa Vicens which looks like it has descended from pages of some fairy tale.
Gaudi never suffered from doubts concerning his own genius, however he has emphasized that he didn´t invent anything: all ingenious was invented long time ago by the Mother Nature, and his task is simply to learn to discover it´s secrets and use them creatively.
On the 16th of November, Casa Vicens will open its doors for visitors. The price for general entrance ticket is 16 Euros and price for ticket with guided tour is 19 Euros. Discounts for seniors, children, disabled people and students are also available.
